πŸ§… Homemade French Onion Dip features rich, caramelized onions blended into a creamy, savory base for an irresistible snack.
🍽️ Ideal for gatherings or game days, this dip brings deep flavor and smooth texture, perfect with chips or veggies.

  • Total Time: 35 minutes
  • Yield: 8 servings 1x

Ingredients

Scale

3 tablespoons butter

2 1/2 cups diced onions (brown, yellow, or white, about 2 to 3 onions)

3/4 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon onion powder (optional)

1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper (can be substituted with paprika)

4 ounces (120 grams) cream cheese, cold and cubed

1/4 cup whole egg mayonnaise

1/2 cup sour cream (full fat preferred; low fat or yogurt can be used)

Instructions

1-Melt butter in a frying pan over medium heat.

2-Add diced onions, salt, black pepper, onion powder, and cayenne pepper. Cook for 5 minutes, stirring occasionally.

3-Reduce heat to medium-low and cook for an additional 20 to 25 minutes, stirring occasionally until onions are golden and caramelized. Remove from heat and allow to cool.

4-In a bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, and mayonnaise until smooth, softening cream cheese in short microwave bursts if needed.

5-Fold the caramelized onions into the mixture until just combined.

6-Refrigerate for at least 2 hours to let flavors develop, preferably overnight.

7-Serve at room temperature, optionally garnished with chopped chives. Best enjoyed with plain crinkle cut potato chips.

Notes

🧈 Slowly cooking onions for 20 to 25 minutes brings out natural sweetness without burning.
πŸ₯„ Using 3 tablespoons butter and reducing mayonnaise to 1/4 cup keeps the dip balanced and not overly rich.
🌢️ Optional onion powder enhances flavor and cayenne pepper can be replaced with paprika for less heat.
