Ingredients
– 1 pound loaf of sourdough or French bread, cut into chunks
– 3 cups chopped apples (about 2 large apples)
– 8 large eggs
– 2 cups milk (whole or 2%)
– 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream
– 1/2 cup sugar
– 1/4 cup light brown sugar, unpacked
– 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
– 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon
– 3/4 cup all-purpose flour
– 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
– 1 teaspoon cinnamon
– 1 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice
– 1/2 cup salted butter, cut into pieces
– Additional toppings such as maple syrup, powdered sugar, whipped cream, or caramel sauce (optional, quantities as desired)
Instructions
1-First, grease a 9 by 13 inch casserole dish to keep things from sticking. Cut the bread into bite-sized chunks and place them in a large bowl, then chop the apples into small chunks if you like, peel them first and add them to the bowl. Stir gently to mix the bread and apples.
2-Next, spread the bread and apple mixture evenly in the casserole dish. In another large bowl, whisk together the 8 large eggs, 2 cups milk, 1/2 cup heavy whipping cream, 1/2 cup sugar, 1/4 cup light brown sugar, 1 1/2 teaspoons ground cinnamon, and 2 teaspoons vanilla extract until smooth.
3-Pour this mixture over the bread and apples, making sure the top is fully soaked. Cover and refrigerate overnight to let it all absorb. When youβre ready, preheat the oven to 350Β°F (176Β°C) and bake uncovered for 35 to 40 minutes.
4-While it bakes, mix up the streusel topping by combining 3/4 cup all-purpose flour, 3/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar, 1 teaspoon cinnamon, and 1 1/2 teaspoons apple pie spice in a small bowl. Add 1/2 cup salted butter cut into pieces and mash until crumbly.
5-Take the casserole out, sprinkle on the streusel, and bake for another 5 minutes until itβs crisp. Let it cool a bit before serving warm, and add toppings if you like. This method keeps the dish moist and full of flavor, perfect for any gathering.
